    Dear Members and Friends,

I am sending you a desperate SOS. Our Community League is in dire need of help: attendance is declining, no one wants to serve on the Board of Directors, and functions are not being attended. The Board of Directors is doing its best, but nine people cannot do everything all of the time. We need your involvement!

Elections will be held on Sat., Feb., 12 at the Annual Membership Meeting/Dinner and we need a Secretary. We have been operating without a Secretary for quite sometime and it has been difficult. The Secretary must be someone who can take the minutes at our Board Meetings, Annual Meeting and any Special Meeting called by the Board. He/she would then transcribe those minutes and get them to the Board members either by e-mail or the postal service. This person would be responsible for certain correspondence, retrieving the at the El Jobean Post Office and sending reminder notices to Board Members for meetings.

We, the Board of Directors, cannot keep the doors of the Community League open without commitment from the Members. None of us want to see the doors close - we have worked very hard, but things have to improve. We have asked for your suggestions, ideas and help and yet we have received nothing. This matter will be discussed at the Annual Meeting on Sat., Feb., 12, 2011. To those of you who are serving, have served, and have already renewed your memberships for 2011, my deepest and sincerest thanks. All of your efforts have been much appreciated.

Please e-mail me at bev.cutter@yahoo.com or call me or any Board Member. We thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

    For the Board,
    Sincerely,

    Beverly Cutter
    President, EJCL

The Myakka River is located in southwestern Florida.

It arises near the Hardee-Manatee county line and flows southwest and then southeast through Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties to Charlotte Harbor, an arm of the Gulf of Mexico.

The river is 68 miles (109 km) long and has a drainage basin of 235 square miles (610 km2). The last twenty miles (32 km) of the river is tidal and brackish.

The Myakka River remains relatively undeveloped. A twelve-mile (19 km) stretch of the river is preserved in Myakka River State Park. A thirty-four-mile portion of the river in Sarasota County (including all of the park) was designated as a Wild and Scenic River in 1985 by the Florida Legislature.
